Lake Como Region
Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy and one of the most picturesque of the pre-alpine lakes. The lake representing an inverted Y, has three branches running from Colico in the north, Como in the south west and Lecco in the south east.
The climate is generally mild, especially in the central area, which makes it suitable as a year round holiday destination. |

| Spring generally sees clear blue skies accompanying mild temperatures (20C) whilst summers are hot (mid 30C) and ideal for a wide range of water sports (Domaso). Testament to the climate in summer is the subtropical plants, camellias, azaleas, lemon trees and olive groves Villa Carlotta (Tremezzo), Villa Cipressi and Villa Monasteri (Varenna). Autumn is similar to spring with temperatures around (16C) whilst winter is ideal for snow enthusiasts (skiing at Madessimo 45 minutes drive or St Moritz 60 minutes drive). |
The east side of the lake is served with trains that run from Colico to Lecco and on to Milan, the west side has roads that lead to Lugano (Switzerland) which is 40 minutes drive from Menaggio (middle point of the lake). At Menaggio ferries that criss-cross the lake, to Varenna (east side of the lake) and Bellagio – ‘the pearl of the lake' which sits, at the intersection of the inverted Y. |
 |
The area is steeped in history with Dante, Verdi, Liszt and Leonardo da Vinci amongst others who have visited and gained inspiration from the lake, mountains and associated panoramic views.
The area is seen as one of Europe's most affluent, the west side of the lake contains the homes of famous residents such as George Clooney, the late Gianni Versace and an array of professional footballers from both AC and Inter Milan. |
Lake Como is an ideal holiday location it is situated 40 kilometres from Milan, which has 2 International Airports, Malpensa and Linate (north west and south east respectively of the city), both of which host all the major airlines. The smaller Bergamo Airport situated 40 kilometres east of the lake is host to a number of low cost airlines. Accessibility to the lake from all Milan’s airports is very good with car hire facilities and regular public transport (coaches, buses and trains).
The towns and villages along the lake are serviced by local buses and lake transport (car ferries, boats and Hydrofoils) and invariably stop at Menaggio where buses operate to Lugano and St. Moritz (Switzerland) |
